el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, also known as Malcom X, is no stranger in American history. If you have studied the civil right movement, then his name indisputably should have come up. Having advocated for the rights of blacks within the United States of America, Malcom X’s life and legacy are often juxtaposed with the well-known civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Unfortunately, because of their glaring differences in approach, Malcom X is the one who is frequently remembered as a fundamentalist who sermonized prejudice, racism, and violence. However, those who acknowledge Malcom X for more than that would contend that his courage in advocating for blacks makes him stand out as not only one of the greatest civil rights activist in American…

In the short story “First Contact”, Leinster approaches the notion of ‘othering’ through the element, vision, and its related elements, light and darkness. According to Dr. Stephen E. Palmer’s textbook Vision Science: Photons to Phenomenology, “vision relies on three basic elements, adaptation, sensitivity, and perception”(5). In Leinster’s short story, the variation and intensity of the several light sources continue to be mentioned, and reacted to by the characters.…

I’m quite at a loss as to what to say. the short story does not give too much away as to Mark Twain’s life or how he lived. i think that the writing of what it might be like to lie is more a treatise on lying that it it ever a comedy, for I do not experience the humour when reading the piece. i think that is what bothers me - it is rather meandering, with some vague references to friends and examples of their faux-pas through lying, even if they didn't notice themselves doing it. the character wakes up in Missouri, where he lives.…
