Somewhere I read the story of a little boy whose parents were very poor. That little boy loved toy soldiers and he sometimes would stand for hours looking at them through the storefront glass window of the toy store. He wished with all of his little heart for just one toy soldier.
One day as he walked toward his home from the toy store, he was struck by an automobile, and taken to the hospital for treatment and recovery. The nurses propped him up on his bed and brought toy soldiers. He gently and fondly touched each one of them and then he said, “No glass”.

We are in God’s hands and we ought to live each day as though it was our last because it just might very well may be our last day (Matt. 24:44). My Lord told a story about a man who had spent his entire life, saving money and gathering the material things of this world for himself. Finally, when he had saved enough of this world’s goods to serve him for many years, he retired. The sad part of this story is that the man had made no preparations for his soul and the very day that he announced his retirement, he died (Luke 12:16-21). We do know that David had, on other occasions, solicited protection from God, because he depended upon God when he went out to fight Goliath. (I Samuel 17:46) Then, during those years that King Saul actively sought to kill him, David asked God to deliver him. (I Samuel 23: 10-11)
However, the subject in this verse is God’s eye. David said to God, “Your eye.” Those who are masters of the Hebrew language state that this verse could have been translated, “I want to be the little man in your eye.” Anytime a person looks toward you, if you look directly into that person’s eye, you can see a perfect, miniature reflection of yourself.
When David asked God to “Keep me as the apple of your eye,” he was asking God to keep an eye on him; to watch over him. David knew that it’s easier to do right when God is watching; therefore, when God’s eye reflected David’s image [The little man], God was looking out for him and that was David’s assurance of God’s
