I once experienced something dreadful, something that changed my life. It included my brother John. John was a tall, skinny kid that always had a smile on his face, but the day our father died he had become a different person. When father passed, the days felt longer, our small cottage felt empty, and the nights were filled with an eerie darkness. Father was one of a kind, his eyes shined brighter than stars and his heart was as pure as gold. He was a fakir and loved tinkering with old artifacts.
Once John overheard father talking to himself about a paw… a monkey’s paw. John watched as father handled the majestic artifact. Father caught him and yelled, “John what are you doing? Get out!”
“But father what is that?” John insisted.

This holds the power to grant three wishes, but I warn you of the consequences.”

Once he’d found it, he had no doubt about what he would wish for. John wished for father to return, and at that moment our entire life changed.
A gust of wind rushed through our old ragged cottage and soon we heard a Bang! Clash! At the window we saw a distinct figure, John believed it was father. As Bob moved closer, he yelled, “Father is that you?”
“Who are you, why have you brought me back,” said father.

I know how to fix this, I know how to get you back father!”
Frantically John grabbed the monkey’s paw and used his second wish to bring back father’s memories. Then, John looked up at father and wondered if his wish came true.
“Son, what have you done,” exclaimed father.
“What do you mean? I brought you and your memories back so we could be together,” replied John.
“ How could you be so selfish? By bringing my memories back, your mother has become ill!”
John ran to Mother’s side, she collapsed and was barely breathing. Within moments she shut her eyes. Mother was gone, John’s tears were like droplets of water fueled by confusion and anger. John glanced at our parents and an alarming thought appeared in his mind. John’s focus was drawn once more to the monkey’s paw, he held to his chest, and closed his eyes.
Father shouted, “John what are you doing!”
“This is the only way I can truly be with you and Mother,” whimpered John. “I wish...for death!”
John was gone, he’d vanished. Meanwhile, I was there, watching it all, not only had I witnessed three deaths but had just become an orphan. I was so overwhelmed by the actions of my brother. This was the worst day of my

William W. Jacobs displays his existentialist nature through themes of freedom, responsibility, and death. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” Jacobs demonstrates these themes progressively through his characters and their actions after a cursed talisman eradicates all limitations. Arash Farzaneh defines existentialism as the measurement of humankind’s “responsibility when facing a universe devoid of laws.” Fundamentally unbound by religious conviction, humankind is required to take responsibility for their actions accordingly if they are to be truly free (Farzaneh).
