Short Story: Leah's Suicide

Improved Essays
Suicide is not a joke. When you are surrounded in a world of unrealistic expectations and darkness, sometimes, or most times, it can be hard to find the light. My friend Leah was encumbered in this world and it was hard for her to see her place in it. She struggled with many aspects of life. Those both in and out of there reach of control. From boys to her brain, she felt that here was no solution to her inner conflict. The grams of weight on her shoulders became pounds; she was sinking helplessly into the abyss of lost hope. Diagnosis were not enough to sustain her well-being, and the half-assed health care that followed made things only more difficult. We formulated a plan to redecorate Leah’s room. Maybe she would like it, and maybe we could give her a safe-haven, a place of reflection or a place for her to proudly call “home”. We started on the project, searching for tapestries and lights, and we finished the room off with pictures. Pictures were of her, her friends, her favorite album, her favorite places and her favorite anything. Leah came back home a week after the 21st to her newly decorated room and her friends were there to reveal it. She was ecstatic to see the improvements, and her emotions were evident in her reaction. Never had I been happier to see my friend. I was thankful for everything about her. Just the fact that I was able to be with her in that moment redefined what friendship means to me. There isn’t enough time in life to take friends for granted. Once they are gone, they don’t come back. How could this new definition of friendship be anything without showing appreciation? Finally, it all made sense to me. More time than not, it is hard to bring somebody up when they are already so down, but the only thing a person can do to help is to provide his or her friendship. In a world where one can feel so alone, lost, or like all odds are against them or her, appreciation is one thing that can always help. Showing Leah how much she means to me to us, is what matters
