I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Many historical events from past and today’s society has greatly influenced my perspective on law enforcement and race. I believe, that in today’s society this topic has increased in popularity. One popular historical event that has occurred in 1955 was during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was caused by a female African American named Rosa Parks. When she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat that was in front of the bus, in that historical time only Americans were allowed to sit in the front of the bus. In Danticat’s Breath, Eyes, and Memory, trauma comes two-fold, as the migratory experience’s rupture of motherhood is furthered by the climate of sexual violence of Haiti’s patriarchal society. Haiti’s political, social, and economic turmoil, caused by a legacy of slavery, oppression, and intervention, funnels immigration into the United States as violence and poverty drive people to escape their native country. Countless women have migrated, many of whom had to leave their children behind, causing rupture and trauma to exist within the familial sphere, as women are forced to mother across the border. This trauma is augmented by the type of mothering that develops once this mother and daughter are reunited, as under this violent climate mothering…
