Short Story: Hills Like White Elephants

I remember it clear as day, as if it was yesterday December 10, 2015. The day my sister and I had arrived in Slidell, Louisiana to witness the next day she was due to give birth to the unknown sex who is now my niece. In that day I had discovered that my monthly cycle of mother nature had soon yet to arrive. “No worries” I thought to myself sometimes my cycle could be irregular. As we arrived back home a week later there was still no sign of my monthly cycle, I had begun to worry. I contacted my boyfriend to let him know that there was a possibility that I could be pregnant. They recently find out that she is pregnant and stuck in making the decision of keeping the child or not. The American suggest that Jig should have the abortion so they can continue to have fun and travel. Jig is a young girl who’s traveling with a guy experiencing things she never tried before. She has high hopes for everything, but ends up being disappointed; referring everything tasting like “licorice”. This child for her could be her escape, and live the life she wants. This puts The American in the pressure of choosing between the abortion or life. Jig doesn’t care too much for either choice long as she gets to have The American, her true intention is keeping the child to make sure he will be there. In the article Men & Abortion Decisions, Hardwig points out a factor that some partners cannot talk about the issue, because it is such a sensitive subject, or have talked about the subject but still haven’t come up with a compromise. In this case it does show insight that they have previously talked about this situation for them to be at train station making the last minute decision. shows the relations of two sets of couples, one couple is love partners and the other couple is married with the similar situation. Both couples battle the decision of having the child or abort. Both women show interest in having the child, but they’re not quite sure of how the man may feel about the child. In the article Men & Abortion Decisions John Hardwig states “A pregnant woman who is planning to have a child over the objections of the biological father or without his knowledge is wronging him” (Hardwig 42). To avoid this situation, the couples must come to a compromise of the decision of what do they want choose; pro-life or pro-choice.
