Max was an only child and he lost his dad when he was 7. His mother had died a month earlier from liver failure. After his dad died 17 years ago, Mrs. Stonefield went off the rails. Drinking and gambling overtook cooking and cleaning and caring for Max. Their relationship slowly started to sink until they eventually stopped speaking altogether. Today was sentencing day. The day there fate was determined. Never in her life had Lucy felt like this. Like her heart and her stomach were melting into one. He knees were weak and her head felt like a boulder. She couldn’t even think straight. As the jury entered the room she closed her eyes and prayed to God, something she had never done before. She prayed for Max, and her heart and their safety. A tear rolled down her face as she opened her eyes but she snapped together. As Max entered the room, she didn’t know if she should smile or cry. This could be the best or worst day of her life. There eyes met and Max mouthed the words “I love you” to her. The jumpsuit and handcuffs were nothing to her. Max took his seat next to Lucy.
“I love you, Lucy” he said again. “No matter what, no matter where I end up, I love you”.
She tried not to cry, but it was so hard to hold it back. He squeezed her hand under the table. This was the most public affection he could give her, and he still had to be cautious because if their relationship became uncovered, they might throw away everything Lucy did for him.
