“Han’s Crime” is a short story about a Chinese juggler, Han, who, during one of his performances, kills his wife. The act was the same as usual. Han’s wife would stand in front of a wooden board, like the size of a door, and Han would throw knives around her and contour her body. After the act went terribly wrong by Han severing his wife’s carotid artery with one of his knives, Han, was immediately arrested. In the story the judge questions a couple people including Han. The judge questions the owner of the circus, and also Han’s assistant. None can tell if it was intentional or not. After the hearing of many sides and perspectives, the judge had decided that Han, was not guilty. Without a doubt, I believe that Han is guilty and that the judge …show more content…

Han has so many motives that can be ruled against him. Han was asked by the judge if he loved his wife, and Han response was “From the day of our marriage until the child was born I loved her with all my heart”. He stopped loving her when the child was born because he knew the child was not his. The child that Han’s wife gave birth to was in fact her cousin. Her cousin was the man that introduced Han to her and wanted them to get married. I believe that the reason the cousin wanted Han to marry the young women was because he did not want to be a part of the child’s life and knew Han was capable of being there. On the same day of the child’s birth was the child’s death. The child died from being smothered by his mother’s breast. The mother said it was an accident but yet Han was not so sure that it can be ruled an accident in his eyes. Just like this case with Han and his wife, I am certain it was not an accident. The judge also asked if the death of the child was “retribution enough” for pay back. Han stated that the death of the child was not enough. If the death or the child was not enough maybe the death of his wife was. After the birth and death of their child, things had changed for Han and his wife. He had no longer loved his wife he was not happy with her. Yet could not divorce her. The night before the killing of Han’s wife, Han and his wife got into an argument. They argued frequently but Han has never
