Gilma Burdge and the Disease Gilma stared in disbelief as her mother coughed up blood. She ran to the kitchen and grabbed a cold washcloth. When she got back to her mother’s room, she had collapsed on the floor. Gilma picked her up gently and laid her on the bed, placing the damp washcloth on her forehead. She looked at her mom’s fragile figure and whispered, “Don’t worry momma, I’ll keep you healthy.” She got up off the bed and walked to the phone, quickly dialing the clinic’s number. It rung a few times before she was greeted by a happy voice on the other end, “Hello, how may I help you?” Gilma cleared her throat, “I need a doctor to come to my house, my mother has fallen very ill and is unable to be moved.” The voice became serious, …show more content…
On the bed, my mother, who seemed to be getting worse, coughed up more blood. Soon, the research facility’s vehicles showed up. We carefully moved my mother into the back of one of the vans. I sat with her in the back as they drove us away. When we reached the facility, they took my mother into a concealed room for observation. I sat on a bench with my head in my hands. After a while I felt a short tap on my shoulder, causing me to look up into a concerned face. She must have been a scientist, given that she was wearing a lab coat and was holding a clip board. She smiled gently, “You must be Gilma. I am terribly sorry about your mother. To be completely honest, her condition is much worse than it looks, but we will find a cure, …show more content…
I looked at my failed experiments and Petri dishes scattered everywhere. I picked my oldest one up and put it under the microscope. I moved it around before stopping and gasping, “I did it!” A scientist nearby ran over and looked into the microscope. The scientist and I smiled and cheered. The other scientists, hearing the noise, came back into the room. Colten smiled and grasped my shoulders, “You did it. You saved your mom.” After we calmed down, Colten, my new friend, created and tested the new vaccine on my mother in the observation room. Within days she had gotten better. By the end of the week she was up and out of her room, roaming the halls. I continued to work with Colten in the lab while my mother recovered. But the time soon came when my mother and I had to leave. I hugged Colten and she grasped my hand, “You are more than welcome, to work here with me. Your quick learning skills and determination are very much welcome in the lab. If you saved your mother, I am positive you can help save
