Short Story: Fear Of Soup

It wasn't that she didn't have her suspicions - in fact, from the moment he'd insisted she eat, she'd been picturing half a dozen ways this could backfire on her and only one of them had anything to do with her weak system - but it smelled so good and she wanted it so much that she didn't even bother responding to his threat in how she would be made to clean up except to grip the spoon tightly and shudder. As soon as the moment was past, however, she went right back to her focus on the food. She took a spoonful and lifted it toward her face, only to feel as though she was doused in freezing water when he threw the term she'd used to refer to him back into her face. This was it, he was going to punish her. She flinched then looked back up at him.

It took her only a split second to realize that he wasn't lashing out at her, at least not directly. She managed to regain her composure to the point she even made a face when he mentioned her fear of soup. Apparently he wasn't aware how many strings could be stuck in a bowl of soup.

She didn't take the spoonful, however, despite his challenge. Instead, she watched with a morbid curiosity as he pulled the bag around to the empty seat. Whatever he was reaching in for, it couldn't

She slipped the bra into place, feeling oddly as though the clothing were holding her together somehow. She squirmed a little, finding the right way to stand and move in order to feel as though the clothing was going to stay on her somewhat gaunt frame. By the time she was ready to consider the food, she felt as though she suddenly had something of a defense against the abhorrent man across the table. Soup first, she thought quickly. There was enough in it to hydrate her for the time being, and she wanted the warmth before she tempered it with cold

I tried harder to find the container for salt and the quiet thumps made by the knocked-over containers seemed to amplify as Elizabeth started to reach the end of the song. I paused my search to check on the only lit-room upstairs and the resumed delicate berceuse calmed me to continue the hunt. This time, I found the salt jar almost immediately. I reached my palm into the rough clay jar, which had a little too many pores for my liking, and the finely grated salt fell into place. A few pinches of salt and another sip proved the soup’s enhanced…

I watched as Mrs. Poe stirred a pot of chili sedulously in the crowded kitchen. She'd planned everything, and it was all finally in order, yet she continued to stir the pot while everyone else rested before the lunch line formed. She seemed so dedicated, perfecting every stroke, making sure everything was perfect. When the lunch line began to form, I started putting warm rolls on every plate that was handed to me, studying the faces of those who waited, then continued to send them down the assembly line. I saw a man with bad burns, the pigment of his skin dis-colored in multiple areas.…

Despite his sudden awe at her presence, Sophie's reluctant demeanor wasn't lost on Kevin. It was discouraging, but he gave a deep breath (one he realized, too late, was probably audible) and waited as she came closer, trying not to stare too blatantly at her shapely legs as they made her skirt swish like a curtain hiding restless performers backstage. He unbuttoned the top button of his plaid flannel shirt and another breath escaped. As she explained her timid goal for the sessions, it did nothing for Kevin's discouragement, and there was even a bit of resentment in there, too. She was clearly just trying to coast by, and had no intention of paying him the attention he was giving her.…

    I. Introduction While nominally based on counterinsurgency, Learning to Eat Soup is primarily focused on how institutions learn and adapt to new challenges. Learning to Eat Soup is broadly divided into two halves: a compare-contrast of two case studies -the British and American experiences combating guerillas in Malaya and Vietnam - and a summary of the way in which two differing military institutions approached the problems arising from adapting to a newer form of combat. Throughout the text, Nagl gives special focus to the ways in which organizations learn when faced with previously un-encountered challenges.…

Regret is the feeling of stepping into a seemingly calm ocean's water- only to be dragged underneath the surface by the under current. It was also, Jace resolved, the feeling of a corset tightening around a not-so-thin body. She took another deep breath as the cursed item of clothing pulled her insides further inside; if that was even possible at this point. The process felt much like a boa constricting its prey. Though, a boa would have gotten the job done faster; she sighed irritated shifting to her other foot, having been in the same position for fifteen minutes now, her back had begun to ache.…

The red stag howled its last as it dropped to the ground. The green glow from its body began to faint and vanished. Kairzo eyed the surrounding trees, vigilant of movements—another Remnant like the stag, might appear. Standing in the center of the trees, he pointed his sword forward and spun steadily, prepared to make a quick slash if something jumped at him. Mr. Enders told him that the forest became strange—small animals became rarely seen and injured lumberjacks came out of the forest—but he did not think it would be this dangerous.…
