Short Story 'Coyote Steals Fire'

Most trickster tales also show a glimpse of the brighter side of a trickster, or the helpful side. For instance, the King in Master Cat, or Puss in Boots says to Marquis de Carabas “It is up to you whether you want to become my son-in-law or not…”. This shows that the cat helped Monsieur Marquis gain the King’s trust enough to allow Marquis to marry his daughter. Another example is in the story Coyote Steals Fire, when the narrator says “They hurried all over the world, bringing fire to every tribe on earth.” Coyote is helpful in the fact that he was able to steal and help bring fire to the tribes of the world. In the short story How Stories Came to Earth the narrator says “And so, child, stories came to earth because of the great cunning

An anonymous person once stated, “Good people bring out the good in other people.” Personally, I believe that truer words could never be said. This quote applies to every single aspect of life, because there are always people around us to make it true. And those in “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”, a short narrative by Bret Harte, are no exception to this form of natural law. In fact, the main idea of this exemplum was that even people who have done bad things can still have a little bit of hidden goodness inside of them, especially when they surround themselves with other good people.…

After attending the Ivan Coyote performance yesterday, I have learned a lot more about they ways how speaking and storytelling can convey certain messages. The performance was very powerful and emotional and the way he told the story to the audience made us feel as if we were involved in his life and felt very engaged. Also, before Coyote came on stage Janice Lee opened, and she sang her poems to the audience. problemsThese were about social justice issues and matters that needed to be changed in society. By singing her songs, the people for one become more engaged in the topics.…

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

The Host raises more suspicions of the Manciple's dishonesty near the end of the Tales when he warns the Manciple that the Cook may pay back his insults by finding fault with the Manciple's "rekenynges," or financial accounts (Manciple's Prologue 74). The Manciple handles this by giving more wine to an already dangerously-drunken Cook, further throwing his ethics into question. The Manciple's Portrait is not the only example we get of someone who tricks those who are above him on the totem pole (see the Reeve for another one). His successful face-off against "an heep of lerned men" (General Prologue 577) suggests that there's scholarly savvy, and then there's financial savvy, and sometimes the twain ne'er shall meet.…

The trickster character will basically do anything to get what they want and they have bad qualities, they are not a typical hero figure. Negative qualities of a trickster are shown in the story “Coyote Steals Fire”. Coyote, the trickster character, cheats in a game of dice against Thunder. Although Coyote ultimately helps the other animals, he still had the negative trait of lying. In “Master Cat”, Master Cat he says “... you will be cut up into little pieces until you look like chopped meat”.…

This citation relates to the present, due to the Coyote was given simple directions to do and couldn't follow them, furthermore he couldn't keep a simple promise he made to Buffalo, similarly humans today do the same, being they make promises which they are unable to keep or are given a simple task, which they can't accomplish. Even more, Coyote thought he could obtain another cow for his broken promise, and by being unable to comply with Buffalo’s simple directions, similarly in today's society people ask for another chance once they have broken a promise or were unable to complete a task like Coyote. Tartuffe is a great example of someone willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. They are the people who are willing to completely destroy other people's lives so that they can be ahead. Tartuffe is an example of how such greed and ignorance was used against people listening to a sermon in a church. It could be said that Wall Street bankers are a near perfect example of someone possessing those characteristics today. There are many more ways that people have infiltrated our lives and manipulated the truth while we put our full trust into them.…

Consequently, the hornets flew inside the gourd and Anansi captures them. This shows the cleverness of the trickster because he had a strategy to capture the Hornets.
