Thick Hair Narrative

Cocoa colored, kinky haired, and thick lipped: I was never fully portrayed as beautiful. If you had the dark skin tone, your hair had to be straight. If you had the kinky hair, your skin had to be lighter, for it to be beautiful. If you had the thick lips, they were either fake or you were a white model. If you had any of these qualities alone you qualified as beautiful, but if they were all together you were runner-up. Until I was in about in 4th grade I was never fully aware of this. As I walked through the of Target, I made my way towards the beauty section, automatically taking my place amongst the other black women in our corner, the one for “Thick and Coarse Hair”. I’d never noticed that word before, “Coarse”. I asked my sister …show more content…
She had an appointment this day and I had an unexplainable this fear of being home alone. We loaded into the car and pulled up at a house. As we walked through the door, the stench of burnt hair and chemical filled our noses. I took my place on the couch in the front of the house with 3 candy dispensers next to it. I was handed my grandmother 's purse as well as 4 quarters and a remote, in hopes that candy and TV would entertain me. I got my usual Red Hots and sat on the couch, my eyes cruised the room until a magazine cover stole my gaze. The cover was amazing to me, it was different. The shiny cover contained a picture of a young women, and read “The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975”.I analyzed the caramel colored woman on the cover, with an afro the size of earth itself. Throughout all the magazines on the table she was the only one without makeup and flat thin hair, but she was still the most confident one, who also spoke a million words in one picture without even trying. I shimmied the magazine out of the cluster and stared at the cover, as if to suck up every drop of its beauty. Her pose was that of a confident lady. As I read through her article something became very clear. She was not at all ashamed of who she was, in fact, She was proud about it. She spoke as if she knew that these standards for beauty that were made for her were not allowed to define her. She made eye contact as if to confront every thought labeling her anything but beautiful and powerful and disproving them. She was a rare gem who knew who she was and would not allow anybody to label her and would not allow herself to conform. I loved it

In the short stories Coming of Age in Mississippi and “Everyday Use”, Anne Moody known as Essie Mae, and Mrs. Johnson otherwise known as Momma, share similar characteristics in the way they are alienated by their actions in the two short stories. Essie Mae and Momma are both strong, independent black women who live in the time period of segregation and intense animosity between the black and white races. Furthermore, they are both experiencing conflicts of interest among their family members closest to them and their selves throughout the entirety of the two stories. It has become routine and expected to see these flawless, submissive women in advertisements. It was surprising to see how women’s home magazines focused more on dismemberment photos than women’s fashion magazines. It is thought that fashion magazines are always the culprit of making women seem always beautiful and flawless. The biggest debate recently is whether or not these models should be photoshopped. This debate seems to be more geared toward women’s fashion magazines, not the women’s home magazines.…

Three Track Phenomenon While thinking of the term “literary mixtape,” a mental list is developed of all the possible examples used to define the term. My mind travels to Brown Sugar when Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs first fell in love with hip-hop. I also think of the soul songs infused in the speeches of President Barack Obama. Maya Angelou’s mixtape is composed of her numerous speeches, poems and books, which moved the nations.…

As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…

Beauty is defined by the powerful members of a society. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, neo-colonialism’s image of beauty entailed westernized features such as thin lips, fine, straight hair, small features and white skin; the paler the skin, the more prestigious. Pale skin often symbolized wealth and status; even Caucasians powdered their skin to look whiter. High society folks did not work outside in the fields, as common laborers did. Their skin was not scourged by the sun.…

Casey Stangel Final Paper COM 498 February 26, 2017 Forming a Statement The music video “Formation”, by Beyoncé, illustrates many representations of blackness due to its focus on black feminism and black culture. It exposes the feelings centered around the issues that the black community has endured in the past as well as current issues faced today. It represents the identity of black women and unapologetically represents Beyoncé’s pride in being black and a woman. As I work to unpack this video, I want to focus on the representation of black female bodies, as well as the ways that Beyoncé uses this video to describe blackness and issues in the black community.…
