Tim O’brien is not only a character in this novel but also the author of The Things They Carried. In the novel and as well as real life, Tim is a very outspoken and blunt person when it comes to voicing his opinions and beliefs. Coming into war as a draftee, Tim did not believe that this war was justified and didn't support the war. Tim wasn't the most excited to be in war but I'm pretty sure he was part of a big majority that wasn't excited to be at war and the fact that Tim didn't like dirt, tents, or outdoor types of things in general didn't help. O’Brien felt obligated to go to war as he felt that the world was watching and didn't want to let them down by not going.…

Although at the time of publishment O’Brien hadn’t been in Vietnam for nearly two decades, the memories and stories he depicts within his novel are fresh and filled with colorful dialogue. The Things They Carried allows readers to view a minuscule portion of the brutality within the Vietnam war and also survey the impact it had on a person’s state of mind. Even though many of the characters in O’Brien’s book have impulses and motivations which can only be explained by the theories of Freud, two intertwined main characters best display actions in line with psychoanalysis.…

The Things they Carried is a semi-autobiographical historical fiction novel by Tim O’Brien. The narrator begins the chapter entitled “How to tell a True War Story” with a disclaimer stating that the story is, in fact, true. However, the complex relationship between an experience in the war and storytelling creates the basis for the underlying question: how do you tell whether a war story is legitimate or falsified? It is hard to say. O”Brien tells us what a true war story is, but his requirements give room for interpretation- a true war story is “never moral” (65), “cannot be believed” (68), “never seemed to end” (72), “[does] not generalize” (74), and is “instinctive” (74).…

A lot can be deciphered out of The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien. Almost everything that he said had a secluded meaning to it. Some of the things he says make you sit there for a little while and think about what he was really trying to convey.
