The short story “I Go Along” by Richard Peck showed that trying new things and going out of your comfort zone could end up being beneficial to you and you could find something that you're very passionate about. Gene was used to being a follower, but you could tell he was committed just by showing up to the bus stop. He didn’t really want to go on the bus but something instinctual made him get on the bus, he was going out of his comfort zone and trying something new. “I can’t see why anybody would want to drive 30 miles to go see a poet” (Peck, 195). This shows that Gene is uncomfortable with what he is doing and that he doesn’t really want to go see the poet. “ I look to class tomorrow with Marty, Pink, and Darla and frankly it doesn’t look

In 1987, Annie Dillard writes an excerpt in her book ,An American Chase, that portrays how differently society views boys and girls. In the world that we live in now, males are allowed to do reckless activities without reprimand, but at the same time if a female did the same thing we would be reprimanded right there on the spot. From birth we are taught to never come out of the perfect little box that society put us in. The social view for men and women are completely different just due to the fact that they want boys to be looked at as troublemakers or loud while a female has to peaceful and quiet. In society women are treated unequal to men due to a stereotypical social view.…

Harmonious, symbiotic relationships exist all over society, some of which being success and failure, love and grief, or fear and bravery. These partnerships coexist with one another, one idea simply becoming unattainable if its counterpart does not exist. For example, bravery becomes impossible without fear. Authors often use these ideas in literature to demonstrate the relationship between two main ideas of a novel. By analyzing this concept, it has become apparent that author Colum McCann uses the idea of struggle and hope in his novel Let the Great World Spin.…

In "A Good Man Down" Lee Jenkins uses numerous writing elements in his article, including word choice and pathos. Many people may ask how communities of such small towns can begin to think of ways to overcome such large tragedies, in this case a devastating tornado, and a school shooting, in which a prominent member of the community was killed, in a small town called Parkersburg? Jenkin begins the article describing the upkeep of the "sacred acre" football field by Thomas, a 58-year-old head coach, of the football team. A way Jenkins introduced word choice as one of his elements was the vivid representation of the upkeep of a beloved high school football field in the heart of Parkersburg.…

To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…

"A Good Man Down" is an article in which Lee Jenkins uses countless writing elements including word choice, tone, and pathos to explain how the small town of Parkersburg overcame two large tragedies in such a short amount of time. Jenkin begins the article using tone within word choice, incorporating sympathy to his readers by creating a vivid representation of the countless hours of upkeep for a "sacred acre" high school football field, that Thomas, a high school football coach did in the heart of Parkersburg. Thomas kept the field looking its best by "yanking the overgrown weeds, killing the yellow dandelions, fertilizing the soil, and mowing the lawn" (Jenkins 1). The words yanking, overgrown, and yellow, in the previous sentence are examples of word choice that the author wrote describing significant descriptions helping readers envision the football field. Reading this paragraph makes the audience paint a picture in their minds of their football field, along with the coaching staff spending numerous hours preparing the field by watering and weeding the field, and painting the white lines before the big game on Friday night.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…

It's better to take the risks to make life more fun in ways you can't think of. If we didn't take risks in life we wouldn’t have any fun and we wouldn't have any inventions and the world would be in stone age again, But we did take risks and now we are venturing into the future. I know that if we didn't take risks our world would be safer, but the people that took a risk made history like Thomas Edison who made the first light bulb.
