What if you were a 15 year old boy who gets beaten at home and all you know is anger? Would you want to change? Would you realize that anger isn’t what you really want to do, be feared by everyone, have no real friends? This is Cole Matthews to a T. Cole is beaten by his father at home if something isn’t perfect. And his father will never give Cole credit for doing well on something if it’s not 110% perfect. If Cole was at a track meet and his parents decided to show up, Cole could come in 1st place and his father would say something like “Oh you could have been faster with your time.” When Cole’s father beats him, he doesn't even remember because he is usually too drunk to know his own name. I think Cole has shown that he can change because …show more content…
I chose this because it shows how Cole’s character has character has really changed over time. Because in the beginning cole was the type of person to say that everyone should fear him. And if they didn't then they would make them fear him. Also, when Edwin was leaving the island. Cole yelled after him “I know how I can help Peter!!!” And when Edwin returned, he and Cole discussed Cole’s idea. Edwin didn't think that Peter’s parents wouldn't allow that. But when Peter and Cole were both on the island, before Peter’s parents departed, Mr.Driscoll told Cole that he and his mother don't want Peter there at all and that it was a complete last resort. In the end, Cole made Peter trust him and believe that he did really …show more content…
Also, he wanted Peter to realize that he isn’t such a bad person anymore. He is now a civil human being. My first example is that, Cole gave Peter a Snickers because he was just sitting outside in the cole and hadn't eaten. Also, Cole was trying to show Peter he isn’t out to hurt him anymore. Infact, Cole’s intention was never to hurt Peter. He wasn't planning out what he is going to do to Peter. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. Secondly, when peter started whaling on Cole, Cole didn't fight back. In all reality, Cole refused to fight back. He said he wasn't going to hit Peter again because that would contradict everything Cole has worked so hard to change about himself. Lastly, Cole slept in a tent so that Peter wasn't afraid to go to sleep at night. Cole didn't want peter to fear him anymore. So he would do anything he possibly could to make it so that Peter was comfortable with him

In Touching Spirit Bear, I think Cole Matthews has character traits similar to those of a bear. One similar trait I noticed is how dangerous a bear and Cole can be. At first sight you would think that a bear is the most dangerous and violent creature to inhabit it a forest. It’s the same concept with Cole.…

One of the best examples from the book is when he brutally beats up Peter driscal. The reason he beats up Peter is because he was angry and furious Peter snitched on him for robbing a hardware store. He beat him up so badly Peter has speech problems, vivid nightmares, and worst of all suicidal thoughts. Cole even burned down his shelter because he was alone and angry with all the people who who planned to send him to the island and also because he wanted to escape (page 25). Cole feels genuine regret for what he has done. He has felt regret towards Peter, towards everyone he has hurt. This has been shown because Cole has been apologetic towards Edwin and Garvey whenever he has annoyed them, but at the beginning of the book he didn’t care. When Edwin and Garvey threatened to take Cole back to Minneapolis, Cole was very apologetic and he wanted to stay. This proves that he is feeling regretful and wants to mend his ways.…

He used to fantasize about a life without stress but did not feel grateful for it after becoming successful. In the video, a scene of his silhouette can represent how he isn’t comfortable about his own life and hides himself. My personal thoughts on the relationship between Cole and his mother were that this relationship between the two was definitely needed. It was great to have Cole’s mother be where his father fell short at times. I feel as if this is why Cole finally decided to speak up to his father because as much as he wanted a relationship with his mother he also wanted one with his father as…
