Short Story: Aber Tawy's First Knight

“My next choice is my guard, Aber Tawy’s First Knight, Sir Maxen.”
He moved to the front of the crowd and caught the fabric in his hand once it reached his hand. He and Audra acknowledged one another with a nod, but nothing more.
“As for my third selection, I choose John as a my champion.”
Several men glanced at one another, since John was such a popular name, so Audra clarified by pointing, and young John, pride shining in his light eyes, stepped forward and bowed.
“I shall win for you today, my lady,” he said, as he caught her favor and tucked it into his pauldron. Several knights chortled at his declaration, but Audra cast them stern looks.
Everyone stood around for a long moment, and Audra was not sure what to do next.
“My lady,” whispered

Wouldn’t it have been incredible to have seen that woman win? Might that have proven that women were strong and capable? Audra tried to dismiss her chagrin and focus on the matches once again.
The fights went on. Huw, who fought with serpentine movements, made it to the quarterfinals, as did Carlton, Maxen, Eudaf, Jac, Vaughan, a knight from Powys, and incredibly, John. The four matches took place and the crowds watched with bated breath. When John lost to Huw the crowd shouted: “No!” John had been the favorite of the day, the underdog, and the people were sorry to see him go. Carlton, Maxen, Huw, and Vaughan advanced.
The fights were long and vicious. The confrontation between Maxen and Huw was particularly long and stressful to watch, and at one point they were tied with two points each, but Maxen dealt a fierce blow that knocked Huw out of the ring. Unconscious, Huw had to be brought to Rignuth’s infirmary tent. Based on the sounds of his angry shouts, it appeared as if he had woken on the way and was well.
Maxen and Carlton met in the center ring and shook forearms. They spoke to one another and smiled, then walked off the field to prepare for the championship match. Between Carlton. And Maxen. Oh dear
