She was the last person left at the funeral home, so it was quiet. She could focus on her work, do the paperwork, and get home before 9:00 pm with any luck.
As she began to do her work, she heard a noise. She looked up from her work to listen, but there was nothing. "I'm hearing things", she thought to herself. "I need to get back to work." She said that out loud to herself, thinking it would help confirm it was nothing.
The man she was embalming, Jerry Bertoli, had been a friend of her family from the time she was a toddler. She started remembering the dinners, cookouts, and gatherings with him and his family. Jackie entered the restroom, splashed her face with cold water, and went to the break room to see what kind of snack she could find to eat. She thought it might help her to focus if she put a little something on her stomach. She found some strawberries from her lunch and ate them, then she went back to finish her job.
