A Rose for Emily is a short story by William Faulkner. This story is about a woman named Miss Emily, although she is already deceased in the story, her life is told from the perspective of a townsman. He begins the short as a curious prospector paying his respects to this “fallen monument”. Miss Emily is perceived as a grumpy ancient lady, who is unwilling to change, her house is the evidence that suffers the most from her stubborn characteristic. “Setting” is defined by the Literature book as a “time and place of a literary work, the setting may also include the climate and even the social, psychological, or spiritual state of the participate. In the story the climate is hardly mentioned but it has significant meaning. For instance, “February came, and there was no reply. (Faulkner)” February is usually a cold winter month and can be a symbol in this quote; Miss Emily emotion is portrayed as cold off putting as she ignores the tax notice and is almost rude to the deputy when they visit her home. Another example, “The town had just let the contracts for paving the sidewalks, and in the summer after her father’s death they began their work. (Faulkner)” The summer represents her emotions when she was younger and fully of life while she was at the peak of her youth, while she acquaints herself with Homer Barron. Although, summer can also mean that something important almost sinister is about to happen. Later in the same scene, she purchases arsenic giving the reader a suspecting hint something terrible is about to happen. Time is referenced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s due to the house and the year of Colonel Sartoris exempted her taxes. Climate was difficult to find, however it represented Miss Emily’s emotions when she purchased arsenic. And finally atmosphere is the main characteristic for setting for it sets the mood of the entire story. In referencing back to Miss Emily’s house it gave the feeling out creepy, out of date, and unwanted as the deputies entered her home due to the description of it. Setting is important to literature for without it the story would not have an impact like it did have towards the end.
