Animals are unique creatures that possess similar or even more humane characteristics than humans. All throughout history they have helped humans develop into what they are today. Though they aid them, animal cruelty has taken shape. Animals are being used for money, hunting, accessories, and experimentation. Many are being used to the point of extinction. The question of whether humans help rescue or continues lies within their efforts.

Animals were used throughout history for education, religion, and amusement in animal fights. In 1985, 87% of medical schools were using animal laboratories. They are known as service animals. Types of services consists of companion, working, military, pack, harness, prison, and comfort animals (Malamud). Situations in which service animals take action is when a service animal navigates a blind person around, comforts a person who has bad anxiety, or cheers up groups like UNC Chapel Hill's baseball team's golden retriever. Countless amounts of animals have become a part of families. They help relieve stress and comfort people when they are feeling down. Dogs are famously known as "a man's best friend." Loneliness disappears for the majority pet owners. Realization of these acts go unnoticed and the abuse progresses as humans look for entertainment.

Animal abuse is spurred from humans and comes in many shapes and forms. There are many causes that lead up to animal abuse such as drugs or an abusive childhood. One form of abuse is physical. Three common reasons as to why humans bring this upon animals is the delight it brings to oneself, ignorance, or possession of an agressive temperament. A woman from Marathon County tortured a 4 year old dog by force-feeding and beating the dog excessively. The women kept a detailed diary of the pain inflicted on the dog. Unnatural feelings
