World War II is frequently labeled the ‘Good War,’ as it is characterized as one of the few wars in history that is justified by a majority of the world. Throughout the entirety of the war, the Allied forces worked to defeat the nefarious Axis powers. Paul Fussell’s book The Boys’ Crusades exhibits the truth about World War II, and it shows the harsh reality of combat. Young servicemen in America risked their lives in battle, and while they are respected for their work, few people understand the brutality they endure. The Boys’ Crusades argues that the brutality of war must be understood by the public, and as a result of the harshness of combat, World War II cannot be classified as the ‘Good War.’…

Due to the recent study of World War Two, I decided to watch a movie in relation to this subject about an American girl’s life that is affected by the war abroad in a small town in Illinois. “Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front,” was produced in 2006 featuring Maya Ritter as Molly McIntire, Molly Ringwald as Mrs. Helen McIntire, David Aaron Baker as Dr. James McIntire, Genevieve Farrell as Jill McIntire, Andrew Chalmers as Ricky McIntire, Tory Green as Emily Bennett, Sarah Orenstein as Gladys Gildford and Sarah Manninen as Charlotte Campbell. The main character, Molly McIntire, is a ten year old American girl living in Jefferson, Illinois in 1943 who is oblivious to the war effort it is at its peak. She enjoys going to the theatre, listening to radio shows, eating ice cream, spelling bees, and spending time with the most important man in her life, her father, Dr. James McIntire.…

Schmitt uses the flowers as an example of the difference between the cultures. While in Western society people give brightly colored bouquets and wreaths to the family of the deceased and even put single red roses on the coffin of the lost one, in China the floral arrangements are made in, “White, the color associated with death in China” (quoted in Faigley…

It is important to honor our veterans because they risked their lives for our freedom. Without them, we wouldn’t have won a lot of wars. Luckily, Congress made Armistice Day a national holiday so we have a set day to celebrate our veterans. Then in 1954 President Eisenhower changed it to veteran’s day to honor all veterans, rather than just from WW1. This is why it’s important to honor our veterans.…

One of the great things about technology is that it saves more lives then we will ever know. Many lives took tolls before technology because we couldn’t sense anything like we do now. We can now see where storms will hit before they’re even a week old and we can announce the news so anybody in danger can seek shelter elsewhere out of the storm’s path. With the technology we have today, we could have prevented many people killed during the storm on Armistice Day. The loss of lives because of the blizzard that hit on Armistice Day back in 1940 could have been, in more ways than one, prevented based how advanced the technology was at the time.…

For me, this wednesday carries a special personal significance as I go through 7th grade. This previous wednesday was Veterans Day, an opportunity to thank those men and women who have served in the U.S. military. It would seem that Americans, and young people in particular, have a hard time relating to veterans, let alone celebrating them, and for good reason. Our culture today increasingly portrays veterans as a group of mostly conservative, uneducated, ornery white men afflicted by a variety of mental illnesses and unemployment. While problems such as mental illness and veteran unemployment are real, the stereotypes they perpetuate do not present an accurate illustration of the veteran population as a whole, which is made up of countless…

Family, Love, and War The photograph “Wait For Me Daddy” was taken by Claude P. Dettloff on October 1, 1940 in Westminster, Canada. The photo was taken around the time of World War 2 where many men were sent to fight in the war leaving behind their grieving families. Most war photos come off as sad or violent to most people but this particular photo gave me the feeling of happiness more than anything, showing the love between a father and his child instead. It is a black and white photograph that shows a large line of soldiers standing in a line in the middle of a street in a town with buildings and old cars parked in the background.…

“In its intransitive form, to hump meant to walk, or to march, but it implied burdens far beyond intransitive.” This quote by author Tim O’Brien explains the effect each character from his story, “The Things They Carried” felt during the Vietnam War. O'Brien uses the items to provide a glimpse into each character’s desires throughout the war. The men carried items for necessity, superstition, and by rank. In his song "God Bless the U.S.A.," Lee Greenwood sings, "And I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me. Two main symbols stand out: the riding hood and the wolves. The riding hood represents the girl, her emotions toward the wolf, and the emotions of girls before her. Carter states, “She closed the window on the wolves and took off her scarlet shawl, the colour of poppies, the colour of sacrifices, the colour of her menses, and, since her fear did her no good, she ceased to be afraid” (117). Along with sacrifices, poppies are their own grave symbol. Greek and Roman myths often use poppies as flowers for the dead, and using poppies here may symbolize the death of the young girl’s innocence and any trepidation she would have toward the wolf.…
