Foster Hewitt, the son of respected journalist William Hewitt, was born in Toronto. He is a passionate hockey fan.
“I never actually expected to become a sports broadcaster. I always just expected to write the articles about the game afterwards.” Foster said in an interview with the press.
The game was between the Toronto St. Pats and the Montreal Maroons, the score being a 4-3 win for Toronto, with the overtime goal from Corbett Denneny. All of the goals being scored in the third period. The St. Pats are currently beating the Maroons 3-0 in the playoff semi final series. This is Toronto St. Pats hockey’ and that’s when it all began. Saturday night around the crystal set.” Charles Fritz told. It was a very big night in Canadian history, and Foster Hewitt is now “the voice” of the St. Pats.
“I never imagined I would ever hear Foster on the radio. I was so proud.” W.A Hewitt, Foster’s father, and a former sports journalist, said.
When Foster was asked to commentate the game, he knew he couldn’t say no. “It was a once in the life time opportunity. I knew I couldn’t let it go.” he said in a post game interview. Previously, he was just a sports writer for the Toronto Daily Star.
The broadcasting room was just a little square box in the boards, with plexiglas walls but no air supply. Foster new this was a chance of a lifetime, so he did not complain. When I talked to him after the game he said he was going to talk to the architect about possibly building something, so he could see all the ice.
Hewitt will be traveling with the team to Montreal tomorrow night. Make sure you listen in.
