He had many things go on during his presidency. Such as the war with Spain. He also served as a brevet major in the 23rd Ohio infantry in the civil war and was the last president to serve in the civil war. He also annexed the Hawaiian Islands.
The story behind the Spanish American war is important to the overall picture and perception of William McKinley. What it is is a us ship was blown up, well some people did fake reports on it called yellow journaling, and said the Spanish blew it up. They eventually figured out that it was not the Spanish’s fault. But that was after we declared war on Spain and had a 100 day skirmish. During the war we ended up with many islands such Puerto Rico and the Hawaiian Islands.
Sadly William McKinley’s story didn’t end in a fairy tell ending. On September 6th, 1902, McKinley was shot twice in the abdomen by Leon Czolgosz. He told a mob to not kill Czolgosz which saved the shooters life. When he was in the hospital his condition got better, even to the point some people left including vice president Theodore Roosevelt to go on a camping trip. But his condition worsened severely and at 2:15 September 14th, 8 days after the shooting president McKinley died of a gangrene
