Jane Haining was a matron at the Girl's Home of the Scottish Mission in Budapest who always put her kid's lives before hers. She was born in Dunscore, Dunfriesshire in Scotland. She spend twelve years of her life teaching and had grown to be loved and respected by her students and colleagues. Her mother died when she was only five so she grew up taking care of her sisters and learning to put her life behind others. In 1939, Nazis invaded Poland and Britain and declared war on Germany. Hungary had an alliance with Germany that kept the invasions at bay as more territories fell to the Nazis. The government protected its Hungarian Jews but the Church of Scotland repeatedly sent letters urging Jane to come back home. She refused saying, "If these
