Garret Morgan was born on March 4, 1877 in Paris Kentucky. He was the seventh child out of a total of eleven children. Mr. Morgan was not totally in African American; he was actually mixed. His mother [Elizabeth (Reed) Morgan} was of Indian and African descent. For his father, “it is uncertain whether Morgan’s father was Confederate Colonel John Hunt Morgan, or Sydney Morgan, a former slave freed in 1863” (n.d.). He found work as a handyman to a wealthy landowner. Mr. Morgan only had an elementary school education, so the money that he earned, he was able to pay for lessons from a private tutor. While still working for the wealthy landowner, sever sewing-machine factories were capturing his imaginations and he strongminded his future. “Learning the inner working of the machines and how to fix them, Morgan obtained a patent for an improved sewing machine and opened his own repair business” (n.d.).
