What type of short and long term effects does child maltreatment and neglect have on a child? Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failure to act, cause injury, death, and emotional harm or pose any risk that can cause harm to a child (42 U.S.C. 5106g (2) 1999). What many individuals do not realize is that there is more than one type of abuse, which are physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Some people also fail to realize the psychological long and short-term effects child abuse and neglect has on a child, which can last a lifetime to some children who do not receive any treatment or the abuse lasts for a periodically long time.
