Shooting A Gun By Brian Capps

Improved Essays
When the author Brian Capps talked about remembering the first time he shot his first shotgun, I immediately thought about my first time shooting a shotgun, OUCH! Wasn’t that hard to think about. I was ten years old at my friend’s house with my parents when they were shooting in the back yard at clay pigeons. My buddy and I where captivated by the sound and watching the clay pigeons break that we wanted to shoot at the clay pigeons too. I don’t remember the make and model of the shotgun but I do remember that they put in slugs so our parents could watch our reaction when we shot. BAM, I shot at the pigeon and missed but I remember the kick of the gun and the bruise I had in my shoulder like it was yesterday.

Our Language “For others, it is to share and spread also those words that are meaningful to us. But primarily for us all, it is necessary to teach by living and speaking those truths which we believe and know beyond understanding,” from “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action” by Audre Lorde. Within our society women are viewed with a lower status than men just because of their use of indirect speech. This is mainly due to how children are brought up within their cultures and ultimately society. However in other cultures, indirectness is used by both genders and it does not reflects one’s status.…

In Adam Winkler’s article “The Secret History of Guns” he explains the history of the Black community’s relationship with gun rights and gun control; from the American Civil war to the Black Panthers, the right to bear arms has been one of the most important rights they could have in order to protect themselves and their community. Black Americans have always been barred from bearing arms but after the Civil War ended with the rise of southern animosity towards Black Americans and the forming of hate groups such as the KKK, freedmen couldn’t rely on reconstruction to fix the south or on Union soldiers to protect them, so they had to rely on owning guns. Fast forward to the late 60s during the early beginnings of the Black Panthers, members…

Firearm debates have run rampant in the past few years, people are starting to feel safe in their place in society. Unknowingly devising their own downfall, allowing others to choose their gun rights without a say. In her op-ed piece, "Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but Get Rid of Guns" Molly Ivins argues that guns are not protected by the second amendment; and that you 're well within your means to defend yourself without them. I whole heartily disagree with Ivins ' views on guns, and believe guns are a fundamental right and necessity for today 's society. I believe everyone has a right to their opinion, and if it 's supported by factual information can 't be denied.…

Nadine Gordimer creates connections between the introduction and the fairy tale aspects in “Once Upon a Time.” To begin with, Gordimer tells her fears of intruders due to her home’s lack of security to the audience in the short story’s introduction. To prove this statement on pages 11-12 the narrator states, “I have no burglar bars, no gun under the pillow, but I have the same fears as people who do take these precautions, and my windowpanes are as thin as time, could shatter like a wineglass. In the same manner for the fairy tale aspect, the wealthy, suburban family shared the same fear of intruders but took measures to insure the safety of themselves and their home.…

From what I read in the book and watching the video, a lot of societies use violence in one form or another as a means of social control. From the video, Kayvan Sabehgi was beaten the police officer for not obeying what the police officer wanted him to do. In this scenario I think that the police officer retaliated to violence as a means of control in this situation and a way to set example for others if they try to retaliate against them as well. From the reading one example that I found most interesting was the Kohistani who “follow a code that demands vengeance against any threat to a man’s honor”, which is a way that men follow rules in society or else there could be dire consequences. The text talked about the story of Omar and how he was killed for staring at another man’s wife, so in that society violence is a way of enacting the “code” they follow.…

It is an act of the Infinite Monkey Theorem, that states that “a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare”(Wiki). The three monkey characters are based upon the poets John Milton, Jonathan Swift, and Franz Kafka. T…
