Shooter Franchies

Great Essays
My research project question was “What are the top five best first person shooter franchises?”. The reason I chose this topic was more or less due to the fact that I do not have many interests outside of gaming, and because other ideas I had seemed far too inconsistent at providing results. I did not particularly want to do this topic, but time restraints and other issues made it the most suitable choice. The majority of my research was based around literature review, more specifically, analysing various reviews and articles about games. A survey was also conducted along with the analysis of several videos, however these played less of a role in the final outcome. The plan was to write the outcome as a script, which would later be used in a short video, but this option got out of hand, so the outcome was left as a script.

As my topic was ‘What are the top five First Person Shooter Franchises’, there was always going to be an aspect of limitation. This is because a topic like this is highly opinionated, which means there can never truly be a ‘right’ answer. However I saw this as a challenge and made sure that my answer was based on factual evidence as much as possible.

Things such as game features, quality of narrative, and overall popularity were things that were tangible as evidence. One issue that reduced the quality of the final outcome was the very limited word count I had to write about each game. As the outcome was written as a top five list, I needed to spend equal amount of time discussing each game, which reduced the amount of evidence I could include overall. Generally speaking though, I believe I did a good job at conveying my points for each

Building 1143 is a challenge in of itself with over 32,000 square feet of area, 25 entries and exits, 12 corridors, two auditoriums, 38 classrooms, 54 offices, large amounts of open space in four common areas, and most of the walls of the building are actual windows. A positive aspect is there are many areas, such as the classrooms, that are optimal to establish a barricade between individuals and the active shooter during lockdown procedures. Additionally, with 25 entries and exits there are plenty of options for personnel who want to escape an active shooter situation. These positive features of building 1143 are important for all individuals to know and could result in lives saved, however, the layout also presents a complex challenge to mitigate or deter an active shooter threat. Features of building 1143…

On the topic of participation awards, Lisa Heffernan and Vivian Diller have both published articles advocating either for, or against rewarding children at a young age, regardless if they’ve won a game or not. In terms of making a strong argument, both writers used celebrity testimonies, life experience, and quotes from reputable sources, some tactics more effective than others. In Lisa Heffernan’s article favoring participation trophies, “In Defense of Participation Trophies: Why They Really do Teach the Right Values,” she often pulls from her most powerful and relevant source to her topic- her son. Statements such as “When my son was around eight years old … he scoffed at the very idea that such an award existed.” would play a critical role in setting up a counter argument, but much like her other quotations in her article, it was followed by a statement from Hillary L. Friedman, a sociologist, that initially seems to back up her son’s opinion.…

Professor Hahn received a grant to study the relationship between childhood obesity and video game playing. Answer the following questions about Professor Hahn's research study: Professor Hahn could study the topic of how childhood obesity is connected to time spent playing video games by using a case study, conducting a survey, or using naturalistic observation. Firstly, Professor Hahn could use a case study to study this topic by executing personal interviews with children who play video-games varying amounts of time, directly observing correlations of weight and time spent playing video games, and studying records. The second way Hahn could study this topic would be by creating a survey. The survey would ask parents of children (who do…

Throughout the evolution of video games, there have been assumptions on how they benefit or denigrate culture through knowledge and violence. In the essay “Dream machines,” Will Wright keys in on the point of video games and how they benefit the culture. He argues that video games are only viewed in a negative light by society due to the assumption by elders that “they’re violent, addictive, childish, and worthless” (Wright 211). By using opinionated evidence that is very biased and tech user friendly, Wright creates an unintentional barrier between him and his intended audience.…

Intercultural Experience Fieldwork Report: Santeria in the Cuban Culture The topic I chose to study and write my research paper about is the Santeria religion, specifically Cuban immigrants in Miami as well as some first generation Americans who are descendants of native Cubans. My goal was to learn more about the secretive religion that many people seem to automatically fear and hate and provide evidence that the religion is in fact a peaceful one that aims to improve humans to become the best persona they can be. In order to accurately depict the religion, I had to do much research online, only to find out that most of the information online is written by everyday people who do not practice the religion as their own, due to this, I had to…

We first discussed our research question, To what extent do Arthur Conan Doyle and Dashiell Hammett use their characters to explore the immorality in their texts The ‘Hound of the Baskerville’ and The ‘Maltese Falcon’?, which she disagrees with due to its broadness of the topic. She recommends discussing justice between the two texts instead of immorality, which I found is difficult to focus, especially with the amount of research I’ve completed so far. We later found that the research question, To what extent are the moralities of the central characters in ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ and ‘The Maltese Falcon’ comparable?, is more specific in a way that I will be researching on the main protagonist and antagonist of each of the texts. Furthermore,…

The writings I’ve worked on for the Research Problem have helped me towards achieving course learning outcome number 2: "Produce an extended writing project that uses research methods and research genres to explore a topic applicable to the course and that draws substantively on concepts from primary and/or secondary sources." From Beaufort, I learned that limiting your writing to one discourse community produces writers who are ill-prepared, highly demotivated and incompetent “products” (Beaufort 7). Hence, I had to learn subject matter knowledge, genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge and the writing process knowledge concerning my professional field. By acquiring this knowledge, I was able to begin my becoming as a competent writer. From Johns and Swales, I learned what the term “discourse community” means.…
