“But Pearl, who was a dauntless child… screamed and shouted, too, with a terrific volume of sound… caused the hearts of the fugitives to quake within them.” In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the story of a married woman who had a child out of wheelock is told. Throughout this novel Pearl, Hester’s child out of wedlock, is viewed as a character who represents sin, hope, and love, because she is a character that represents a different person than what a puritan is suppose to be, the way that Pearl stands out and does not fit into the puritan colony is shown throughout the story. Since the day Pearl was born she was a representation of sin and of a “Demon offspring”(Hawthorne 232). Pearl was a child out of…

In the article “The Shoemaker and the Revolution” by Alfred F. Young, he explores what caused the common man to become a revolutionary. In 1764, when the Sugar Act was put into effect, the common man was not affected. Though the second act, the Stamp Act, affected everyone, the first major act of rebellion was not until nearly ten years later, when The Boston Tea Party occurred. While the taxes were surely unwanted, the fact remains that the colonists were paying far less than what the British were, and today we pay far more than what we did as colonists. Therefore, logic shows that the common man had other purposes for revolution besides being taxed.…

The endings of stories are crucial to making a good tale. Endings are used for wrapping up the falling action, explaining the mysteries, and tying up loose ends. Without endings, stories would constantly have one event after another happen with no stopping point and the conclusion would be left of to a reader 's imagination. Due to the vitality of endings, readers must evaluate them based one whether or not they do a fine job at concluding the story instead of whether the ending is happy or not. In The October Killings by Wessel Ebersohn, the ending takes place over three chapters.…

In every tragic event, we look to a person, or group of people, to blame for the disaster. Someone must always be at fault, whether it be Mother Nature, a president, or in this case, family. Romeo and Juliet were controlled by more than an unmerciful fate; many little events combined to influence what would become of the young lovers. Ignorance and Vengeance caused it. By extension, I guess you'd say it was free will because Montegue and Capulet both used free will to fight and kill and quarrel with each other for who knows how long, but Karma or fate kind of decided the punishment for it, I guess. However, free will allowed both sides to end it at any time prior to Romeo and Juliet's deaths. They just never took it * It was fate that Juliet didn't wake up before he had killed himself.…

In every plan, scheme, or procedure that fails, someone is always to blame. Within every situation that goes wrong, it was someone’s actions or words that caused it to be unsuccessful. Over the course of reading the story “Romeo and Juliet”, you come across several ignorant people that made mindless decisions that lead to the outcome of the famous couple’s death. However, the one specific character that had the most control and fault was unarguably Friar Lawrence. In my opinion, the theme of disappointment best describes Shoemaker’s life as written in this article. In as much as he has worked tirelessly to create celebrities, some of whom have featured in the Hall of Fame, he has never been personally recognized as the man behind the successes of these personalities. Furthermore, Shoemaker has made millionaires while undertaking a job in which he receives a meager salary of fifty thousand to seventy-five thousand dollars annually (Plaschke, 2015). He has been the architect of dozens of headlines that never mentioned his name. As if that is not enough, Shoemaker has established multiple light moments, which he can only observe from far.…

I think that the theme of the story The Christmas Hunt by Borden Deal is that too much ambition leads to negative results. You first see the theme come into play when Tom asks his father to go on the Christmas Hunt and he laughs at him because he thinks he’s too young. Tom hasn’t practiced shooting a gun so obviously his father doesn’t think that he’s ready. Tom misses on the first couple fields but on the last one he accidentally shoots Calypso Baby and carries her home to his father.…

Love stories can end tragically or happily, be mocked or be celebrated, and be laughed at or loved by many. The story of Pyramus and Thisby in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story and told as if Shakespeare knew it himself.
