What happened in the end of the story is that Bruno and Shmul had become best of friends and Shmul's dad was missing. Bruno had yet been into the camp yet because it would have meant him digging under the fence. Seeing that Bruno was about to leave for Berlin he went and saw Shmul one more time and said he would help him go looking for his dad. Well they ran all over the camp and couldn't find him but as Bruno was about to leave him and Shmul got sent into a chamber with others and were made to undress. Shmul and Bruno thought it was to get them out of the rain but it turns out it was a gas chamber and by the time Bruno's parents found out where he was it was to late.
