Shirleys Hardball Case Study

Shirley did not have good leadership skills for many of reasons. Shirley did not give out directions, she did not give negative or positive feedback, Shirley was very defensive, and she did not listen or care about her players. Shirley showed no type of emotion with her players, and because of this it caused her team to loss many of games. Some people might assume because Shirley was young that that would be the reason why the team had so many problems but I beg to differ because Shirley was very successful with the soccer team, Shirley was just not comfortable with basketball as she was in soccer and that is ok, but Shirley should have trusted her team more like Shirley wanted her team to trust her. Even still if she did not take inconsideration of what her players experience and suggestions of last season she should have been clear about what she expected of her players for the season. She also should have given feedback to her players so they would know what they were doing right and wrong. For, example Shirley wanted the team to use a certain type of offense and she claimed that it had been proven to work and how a JV team she once coached picked it up in two weeks and her teenager team had picked it up quickly also. Although, this might be true but when she realized it was not working for this Varsity team she should have went back and revalued the situation and came up with a different strategy, rather that meant changing up the offense all together or simply talking to her team and re-teach them the offense

In baseball, teams must use their money wisely. Blowing money on big-time players is not an option for all teams, as some teams cannot afford to purchase those high caliber players. Also, people are not always what they seem to be right off the bat, and the dark horse can be a winner in the right circumstances. The film Million Dollar Arm, directed by Craig Gillespie and the novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, written by Michael Lewis, demonstrate that a team does not need a high payroll to sign good players, and reveal that the weakest links on a team often prove to be the strongest.…

Perham softball head coach Tyler Doll knew his team would need to score a lot of runs if it wanted to beat the Park Rapids Area Panthers on April 4 at Arvig Park. However, Panther pitcher Brooke Jerger made sure that didn’t happen when she shut down the Yellowjackets, helping the Panthers to an 11-1 season opening win. Jerger scattered four hits while allowing one run. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter. She started strong, striking out five of the six batters she faced to start the game.…

Problems within the Lines “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will, and a lack of change”-Vince Lombardi. Central Dewitt’s football program usually has a tradition of great success and excellent morals. Unfortunately, in the 2014 and 2015 football season they have a combined record of 5-13, which does not live up to the standards of the DeWitt community. There are many problems circulating the football program, but most involve the lack of experience in coaching. Central Dewitt ‘s losing football record for the past two seasons can be solved by coaches properly developing their athletes, and incorporating new offensive and defensive strategies Central…

She should be mindful of the social and psychological climate of her basketball team. The players work well together, but the players are frustrated that Shirley is not open-minded to what has worked in the past. The type, place, and purpose of the basketball team and the goals of the team should be valued more. Shirley seems to be less knowledgeable about basketball versus soccer. She is not focused on other plays that will help the team win.…

The ones that stood out as leaders all worked hard to motivate the players to get along and play as a team. Coach Boone, the new African American head coach, pressed for the team to give it their all, to do as well as they possibly could, and to not strive for anything beneath perfection. Coach Yoast, the former head coach and now assistant coach, would encourage the players and did not believe winning was the highest priority, as long as they tried their best. The coaches had a conflict of interest most of the time during the film, but in the end, their different ideas helped the team and led them to a "perfect” season. Gerry Bertier, the team captain, showed his leadership in several ways.…

When interacting with others, individuals have the tendency to associate their reactions, thoughts, and feelings, that occur during a conversation, to other individuals they know or experiences they have had. For example, I may meet a girl in a bar who reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, and thus, I cannot give her my undivided attention because I am too distracted with her similarities to my ex-girlfriend. When this phenomenon occurs in therapy, it is referred to as countertransference. Freud (1910) argued that, when it does occur in therapy, countertransference can have a negative effect on the therapist’s ability to treat the client.…
