There six functions of the family,that Shirley Zimmerman has summarized that if fulfilled will fulfill the necessary roles in society.however if society no longer motivates individuals to carry out these responsibilities,neither the society or the institution of family will survive.

Addition of new members through procreation or adoption:Although in the moving the reasoning behind the infertility is unknown,this need for procreation is not being met.Which is detrimental to the progression of society
Physical maintenance and care of group members:Only certain individuals are receiving proper physical care,for example, Nigel,Theo cousin who is a government minister who lives in a mansion protected from the chaos. In the …show more content…
Social control of members:Due to the war there is little social control because there is a war going on,this can be seen through the various rebels in the movie.Although the government has issued the end of all immigrants by police and military there is very little control in the society at the time,so again this need is not being met.
Affective nurturance-love:To a certain degree this function is being because although chaos is rising around them,this caused others to love and care for each other more than normal because at any moment they could die.This is shown between Theo and Julian;although they separated Julian states she can trust him and insinuates hope for their future relation.
Production,consumption, and distribution of goods and services:Business are still functioning ,as Theo attend work in the beginning of the film although buildings are blowing up around him.society has met this need which has helped the family structure as some still have …show more content…
I appreciated the year that this was set in being so close to the present,was a nice representation of how society could become like this because Canada is seen as the multi cultural country.Also with the controversy about the entrance of refugees recently this could easily be Canada. Moreover, the elements of irony were delightful.For instance, the part when Kee the refugee that is having the miracle child reveals that she is pregnant to Theo the protagonist;she was placed in a farm surrounded by cows as a form of lactation and motherhood.Another form of irony was the presentation of the blimp of the pig.this represented the expression of “when pigs fly”signifying that can anything can happen.Overall I would rate this 3 stars out of
