Hurling Stones “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson takes place in a small farm town. The story begins with boys gathering rocks, “eventually making a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarding it against the raids of the other boys” (Jackson 1).The citizens then gather and begin the lottery, each family taking a piece of paper from an old box. Whoever’s slip has a black spot must draw again, alongside their family, and whoever draws the black spot within their family is stoned to death. Once the deed is done, the townspeople hurriedly return to their daily routines.
