In the short story “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, the theme of the story relates to the mother. The author was trying to get accross to the reader that you should love a person so that they know you care about them, but not to the point where you don’t consider if everything is true or not. Readers believe that this is the theme because throughout the text, the narrator, Laurie’s mother, never thought once about whether everything Laurie was saying was true or not. An example of this is when Laurie’s mother was concerned about Charles affecting her son negatively and was thinking of pulling him out of kindergarten.
