In my peer tutoring class, many students work well as a group. These students have the ability to self-teach themselves and others. However, there is one particular student who struggles to understand the material that is taught. For the purpose of this assignment, I will nickname him “Jackson”. Every day in math class, Jackson struggles to understand the concepts that are taught. Jackson lacks the ability to make connections and often forgets things instantly. Jackson does not review regularly; therefore he faces an immense amount of difficulty to learn. Ms.Punj, the math teacher, has assigned me to help Jackson succeed and learn the material. After Ms.Punj has taught the lesson, it is my duty to take Jackson to a different room and reiterate …show more content…
Since Jackson does the review on a regular basis, he tends to forget a lot of the material that is taught by either Ms.Punj or me. I can see that Jackson is fully capable of succeeding in the course if he finds time to regularly review and replenish his passion for math. Watching Jackson for the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that he really enjoys playing American Football as he carries around a football to math class every day. I have told Jackson many times to put the football away, as it is a distraction to his learning. Being able to observe the way Jackson thinks and communicates his knowledge, I have assisted Jackson by giving him some strategies on how to succeed in the course. I have told Jackson “Math is 1% intelligence and 99% hard work.” In addition, I have also told him about my story of how I had to work very hard to be in the position that I am at today. As a young student, I struggled in math and went to tutoring for multiple years. During the years I went to tutoring, I saw a drastic improvement in my mathematical skills. This improvement was mostly due to the fact that I had someone to help me understand the concepts and answer my …show more content…
Being a peer tutor, I have helped to reestablish his motivation by encouraging his questions, so he would not feel sad when he asked a redundant question. Consequently, Jackson showed up to the next after-school tutoring day to seek help for math. I gladly helped him, and I appreciated his desire to learn math. Also, I suggested Jackson to review math on a regular basis. However, Jackson has not yet followed up with that task. Jackson has said that he does not have the time to regularly study as he plays competitive football after school every day. I have advised him to start slow by reviewing whenever he has some free time. Next, I have tried to come up with a way in which I can correlate American Football with math to make it fun and intriguing for him. For example, when Ms.Punj was teaching the topic polynomials to the class, I made some connections and connected football and math together. I created a question about finding the area of a football field using polynomials. I noticed that Jackson was very intrigued to solve the question because the question had something to do with football. The last way I have assisted Jackson in coping is by advising him to get help from someone he feels comfortable with like a school

Summary I gain a lot of insight and learning from going through the process of identifying a student, getting to know them, administering a variety of assessments, writing about and interpreting the test results, researching interventions and supports, and making recommendations based on all of the information collected. My two main takeaways are that I had some difficulties with Woodcock Johnson IV assessment and that I significantly changed my mind about the pedagogy of math. I struggled with administering and interpreting the Woodcock Johnson IV. While I was administering the test it was difficult to just follow the script and not prompt the student to think about the question longer or review their work before they had a final answer.…

In addition to an evaluation of Jackson’s cognitive processing skills, an assessment of his social and emotional functioning was also collected to determine how these factors may be contributing to his overall functioning in school. The Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) teacher report (TRS) was administered to Jackson’s special education teacher Dominic Fontana. While the teacher is helping the student along, he or she can monitor what areas the student might be struggling with. If the teacher is instructing a large classroom, this strategy might be better done in small groups. There is considerable evidence to indicate a that verbalizing upper level math problems has a pos6itive impact.…

The following Antecedent-Behavior-Consequences (ABC) Chart has been prepared for Jackson K. Direct observation was done during his Integrated Algebra 1A class to complete the ABC chart. The purpose was to identify “environmental and contextual variables that support challenging behavior” (Chandler and Dahlquist, 70). There are some consequences that are often related to appropriate and challenging behaviors, some desirable and others not. Unfortunately, oftentimes students that engage in challenging behaviors are removed from the learning environment. This is not helpful because the function of this behavior is avoidance and so the behavior is successful from the student’s perspective.…
