Rainsford shows examples of Man vs Himself when he runs away from General Zaroff. Rainsford is up on a tree when he hears the sound of footsteps coming towards him. Zaroff tells Rainsford about his new hunting animal, but Rainsford is shocked after he hears what the animal actually is, a human, he said, “‘Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder”’(7). General Zaroff insists on Rainsford going hunting with him, but Rainsford refused he said, “ No, general, I will not hunt with you”(10). Rainsford wishes to leave Zaroff’s island but the only way he could leave is if he won Zaroff’s hunting game. Rainsford asks the general what will happen if he wins, Zaroff responds, “‘ I’ll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeat if I do not find you by midnight of the third day…”(10). When Rainsford comes out from behind the curtains, he does not want a boat to get out of Ship-Trap island, he wants to kill General Zaroff.“Splendid ! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
