Our relationship with the natural world has been demonstrated in many of the works that we have studied throughout this course. It has been represented with danger, emotions and instinct. To begin, In Stephan Cranes, The Open Boat, the men are stranded at sea with no one to help except for their abilities as humans, who have no power to defeat the natural world. From the beginning of the short story the tone of the men showed despair and helplessness.…

A major theme from this week’s reading on Liberty is the liberty to challenge, criticize and oppose. Liberty can be defined as the state of being free with no restrictions being imposed on you. As stated in the power point penalties do not get rid of ideas but send them underground or hidden. Mill ideas on this are “Our merely social intolerance, kills no one, roots out no opinions, but induces men to disguise them, or to abstain from any active effort for their diffusion.” A pop cultural event that relates to this week’s reading on liberty and the liberty to challenge, criticize and oppose is a tv series called Black Sails.…
Also, paramedics are required to help individuals that are in the most severe conditions first, and not let their emotions control their decision on who to help. Medicine and the military are two very different lines of work, but both face inner battles that may control the decisions that they make. It is evident that, individuals in high stress situations will be required to question their morals when making decision to perform a task. Individuals in Black Hawk Down have to face constant moral dilemmas that influence the decisions they make in order to live. Notably, the soldiers had to decide whether they should open fire on individuals that appear harmless compared to other individuals that are armed and dangerous.…

In the excerpt from "The Truth About Being a Hero," Niemi, a young marine, chucked two grenades inside of a bunker while the NVA were positioned to fire at him, and as they went off, he had fallen to the ground seemingly dead. Niemi impulsively put his life in danger in order to protect not only his fellow marines, but to protect the country. His impulse was to do anything to get rid of the NVA, which led to him saving many other lives. In the same passage, the author described an experience where a man with a bad reputation recklessly acted in order to protect his fellow marines: "He grabbed the rifle, stood up to his full height, fully exposing himself to all the fire, and simply blasted an entire magazine at the two soldiers in front of us, killing both of them. " This man displayed that he didn't think about his own life; he didn't think about the recklessness of his actions.…
The two stories “Breaking through Uncertainty- welcoming adversity” and “Neighbours” are both stories about how big the benefits are when you take risks. The first short story is about how a skydiver must overcome his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still dramatic, just in a different tone; it's about a young woman, who has to decide whether or not a friendship is worth standing up for something that’s right. The protagonists in both stories, they have to take risks, and they’re both rewarded for taking those risks; on with his life, and the other with a stronger friendship. Even though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in “Neighbours” had more gut to do what she had to do, where's…
Unlike Tanizaki fall in love Japanese modernism, Kobayashi Takiji depicts the dark world under Japanese modernism. The things that display in The Crab Cannery Ship are totally different from Tanizaki’s Naomi. These distinctions are resulted by the development of capitalism. The poverty gap is magnified in the early stage of capitalization because of the incomplete social system. It can be noted that although the protagonists, Kawai and the workers in the ship, are in the same social level namely working class, they completely live in distinguished circumstances.…
Have you ever confronted with any unpredictable problem? If we confront with an unpredictable problem, we usually can't meet the problem and even stop thinking. However, some people who have a great ability to react solve the situation calmly and rationally. ' SULLY' is the best example of it, and the movie impacted me in powerful ways. This movie is referring about 'Miracle of the Hudson' that occurred in 2009.…
Realism and naturalism are two different literary movements, but they have many similarities. Realism expresses real life situations and focuses on a true illustration of life while naturalism is represented like an overstated type of realism. Naturalism is based on humans versus a force that is out of their control. Short stories in American literature portray realism and naturalism in many ways. Editha, The Open Boat, and An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge are all based on these literary movements.…
The story that I chose to do is ‘The Chosen Vessel’ by Barbara Baynton. The story, originally regarded as a female gothic genre, is transformed into a psychological horror. The genre of psychological horror is a subgenre of the literary horror. It’s different from that of a horror as it doesn’t rely upon archetypal techniques such as jump scares and the use of ghostly entity to reinforce horror; albeit, it heavily relies upon the character’s fears and emotional instability to establish tension and unsettle. A psychological horror fails to build any empathy within each characters, hence evoking a feeling of distrust among the readers.…
In our studies of the sea, one theme connects its’ role in all stories we’ve read: the cyclical nature of its power. In Riders to the Sea, the sea brings sustenance and income to Maurya, as well takes away her husband and all of her sons. In The Sea at Dauphin, the sea brings Afa a livelihood but takes away everything else worth living for. The house in Home follows a similar pattern. There are celebrations of life and death, union and separation, and happiness and despair.…
