This taught Nailer and his crew that they should treat everyone poorly and not have any feelings for anyone. For example when Nailers Dad is drunk out of his mind he will abuse his the workers, then say “we are crew so it does not matter.”(Pg123) This shows that propaganda is used majorly to trick kids/teenagers that it's fine to use people as slaves. Even Nailer and his crew say “it's fine boss were your crew”(Pg15) right after his dad threatened to abuse them. In this novel Ship Breaker lack of freedom is used to control the rust rats. Lack of freedom shows how a boss/dictator controls a community of workers in a way where they can not speak or do anything without approving of the boss/dictator. One example is how Nailers Dad demands the rust rats that they can’t go anywhere or say anything without asking their Dads for permission. The last example of the characteristics of dystopian society is money/pay. This is used in the shipbreaker because the author clearly states Nailer and the rusts rats getting payed minimal to no pay. This book is also not that far fetched from our real society because there are real ship breakers that live in shacks on beaches and working in very unsanitary conditions.The main key points that the book uses to make it a dystopian society are bureaucratic control, propaganda, dystopian protagonist. These examples are what our society needs to be careful about before this happens to us. In conclusion this book shows dystopian controls and that the author indeed is trying to give society a warning before it’s too
