Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan. Coming up, Japan didn’t seek to embrace modernity and didn’t want to embrace change. In the later parts of their history, they would embrace modernity and Japan would modernize quickly and would go on to do great things with the technology that they would go on to possess and have at their disposal. The japanese religion of Shinto is mainly focused on the beliefs of ghosts and other supernatural entities and there is an belief that you need to be on right terms with them in order to avoid receiving their wrath. According to japanese beliefs, when a person dies in an unnatural way, the rage and sorrow that is built up inside of them will manifest itself into an angry spirit, a supernatural being known as Onryo. This here is referenced in The Grudge film. During the early years when Kayako would go and pick up her son from school, she would always say hey to him and would occasionally write love letters to him. One night, while flipping through Kayako's diary, Takeo would find out about her secret affair with this man and it would drive him insane.
He would go and murder his wife Kayako and his son Toshio in a brutal way and they would be reborn as ghostly spirits. Also according to Shinto beliefs, when someone is reborn as a ghostly spirit, there are intentions are not merely to get there revenge on the person who caused their death, but to punish and haunt thoses who dares to come into contact with their ferocious rage. This to is evidenced in The Grudge films. In The Grudge films, Kayako does get her revenge on Takeo for killing her and her son. From this moment on, a grudge would be placed on the house that they had resided
