He gathers up all of his fury and pushes; tries to break free like he does on the rare nights he can get out on his own, but he’s locked down tight. He can’t go anywhere. He picks up screaming right where she left off, but she isn’t even trying to listen.

She collapses in a heap of shaking limbs and barely restrained sobs. She aches, and it feels like they’re dying together, right alongside Shinjiro.

A warm embrace circles them, drags them away from the scene she can’t tear her eyes away from.

Time starts again, but he doesn’t notice until the wail of sirens pierce through the night air.

He’s alive. A deep voice breathes the words into her ear.

She sags with relief in tandem with the rage coiling around him again. Shinjiro is alive,
