They are the heaviest and most expensive of the three basic types of asphalt shingles. Like dimensional shingles, architectural shingles have a three-dimensional appearance, but premium shingles offer enhanced dimensionality through areas of contrast and shadow. Some styles of architectural shingles are virtually impossible to distinguish from wood shakes or slate when viewed from the ground. Warranties on architectural shingles typically start at 40 years, and some carry lifetime warranties.
Pros and Cons of Composite Shingles
Composite shingles are attractive and economical, and all styles are available in a variety of colors. Organic and fiberglass styles are highly resistant to water penetration and fire, but fiberglass composite shingles have a slight advantage over organic shingles in both areas. In a high wind, a roof may lose a few shingles, but replacement is fast and economical. If an area of the roof is heavily shaded, moss or mold may find a hospitable environment for growth; there are products that your roofer can install to solve the problem.
