Shine Film Analysis

The film Shine, directed by Scott Hicks, is a film about a man named Peter who terrorises his son David and makes him think that the only way to make Peter proud is for David to always win. This caused David to have a mental breakdown and to emotionally crack under the pressure. He would always feel the need to be in or around water so he could mentally cleanse himself and try to forget. The film began when David is running the streets in the pouring rain, he then stops at a restaurant Moby’s. Hicks used this as the introduction to the film to give us a view into David's life and also him at the lowest point of his life. As you notice the camera zooms out which gives you full few of the bathroom, i noticed it was dark and looked quite cold, as is the rest of the house. In this scene Hicks uses the shadow over Davids face to show his mood and how he is feeling. The view from the window shows how traumatic it is for David it shows that he still needs to cleanse himself from his father’s oppression. So, David had to cleanse himself from his father for his own good, he felt the need to be in or around water to deal with his inner demons caused by Peter. It left a mental strain on his lifestyle so David could not deal with it in a “normal” psychological way.
