People are in relationships to be happy, smile, and laugh not to be upset and hurt. There are people who often face many obstacles and challenging times that can tear a relationship apart. Bobbie Anna Mason shows that in her short story “Shiloh” where people sometimes lack the problem of communication in a marriage which ultimately prevents it from being secure. Mason shows this by having a plot ___. The characters of Leroy and Norma are developed through Leroy's own perceptive as the narrator is extremely limited. All this is done so that the audience can get an understanding of how two people in an unusual relationship grow apart due to intense challenges and how some people come to terms with themselves while others are unwilling to adapt making it difficult to work out things out.

Leroy just assumed everything was going to be just how it was when their marriage first began, but Norma has just become so accustom to not having around she eventually became her own husband. The couple’s main failure is not talking about their son Randy’s death. They were at a drive-thru and once the first movie was over they noticed the baby was dead. They found out it was sudden infant death. Their habit of avoiding any mention of the baby takes a tool on their marriage. For example, when Norma’s mom, catchers her smoking. The next day, Mabel talks about a baby who was killed by a dog, claiming that the mother was neglectful. “The very idea, her bringing up a subject like that! Saying it was neglect.” (par), Norma’s response to Mabel’s comment suggests that Randy is always at the forefront of her
