Shild's Burial In Beowulf

Improved Essays
Shild is the ancient King of Denmark. He is the father of Beowulf. He can be described as a merciless conqueror who made Denmark into a glorious, successful, and wealthy nation when before it was “kingless” and “miserable”. Shild was once an orphan but is now a great warrior showing that he is a self made man. From the view of others he is respected and described by “rich and much honored”.

2.Shild’s burial was done by his men, who sent him out into a ship full of treasure. His people showed him great respect and refused to send him away to his death with any less than he arrived with. The burial shows how the culture honored their King. In the poem line 42, it reads “no king sent forth more deeply mourned”. This suggests that Shild was the best thing to happen to Denmark thus far.

3.Hrothgar is a long descendant of Shild who we are introduced to in the beginning on the prologue. Hrothgar is Shild’s great grandson. Beowulf had a son, Healfdane who ruled, and then following, Healfdane had four children. Out of his four children one was Hrothgar. Hrothgar is a good leader and lives up to his past relatives standards. Hrothgar “led the Danes to such glory that comrades and kinsmen swore by his sword”. (Line 65). He was strategic in war and built the gathering place for his men. This

The description is of all peaceful, beautiful creations God has made. It is enlightening and positive. The contrast comes into play when the bad creations of God are described. The mood is very dark and the character Grendel, a monster plastered in slime. The bad side of Earth and hell are revealed, “made his home in hell not hell by Earth”. This contrast may be foreshadowing the horror that will occur because at first everything is going swell but now it is being played by

In order to achieve understanding of the quintessential hero narrative, one need not look further than the depicted deeds of the eternally glorious Germanic hero Beowulf. The 3,182 lines of Old English poetry containing Beowulf’s tale are not just filled with bloody battles with evil incarnate—and his mother—but rather the sociological concerns of the culture at that time. As an epic, Beowulf communicates these concerns through Beowulf’s ideal behaviors of immense generosity and undeniable loyalty to his brethren. Such behaviors result in Beowulf’s undeniable status as a model warrior and noble king. In contrast, the later Nordic hero and revered dragon-slayer, Sigurd of Saga of the Volsungs, does not earn everlasting glory as a result of his…

Characters in all kinds of fictional stories are characterized into different groups depending on how they shape the plot. In the great Anglo-Saxon Epic poem, Beowulf, many characters are featured as either static or dynamic. The main character, Beowulf, encounters many obstacles and undergoes multiple trials that cause him to immediately attract the attention of readers. However, Beowulf is a static character throughout the epic because while his personality may alter as he ages, his character stays the same, and does not undergo a major change that alters the plot. Beowulf, a young warrior from Geatland boasting with confidence, bravery, and rigor, is called by Hrothgar to help the Scyldings defeat the spine-chilling monster, Grendel.…
