Phil Knight born February 24, 1938, Portland, Oregon, U.S. Phil Knight was an American businessman who co-founded (1964) the multinational sportswear and sports equipment corporation Nike, Inc. He ran cross country and track for the University of Oregon where he then fell in love with sports and the idea to bring athletic shoes to the USA. First off, Phil Knight was just a regular kid that grew up in the middle class. He loved sports, running was his favorite. He ended up pursuing running for the University of Oregon where he earned an education, as well as Stanford. After college, he came up with this crazy idea. He wanted to import and sell Japanese running shoes because he felt that athletes weren’t getting the best gear to perform at their peak. Phil Knight said about his crazy idea, “So that morning in 1962 I told myself: Let everyone else call your idea crazy. just keep going. Don’t stop if you want to. Don’t even think about stopping until you get there, and don’t give much thought to where “there” is. Whatever comes, just don’t stop” (Knight, 2016, p.65). Phil Knight had a great outlook on life early on in his childhood. Phil Knight enjoyed sports and pursued that enjoyment by running cross country and track and field for the University of Oregon. He used that enjoyment to come up with that crazy idea of selling Japanese shoes.
