A shigella infection is an infection of the intestines that can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other symptoms. The infection usually lasts 5 to 7 days.
CAUSES
This infection is caused by shigella bacteria. This bacteria can spread through a person's stool. You can get this infection by:
Eating a food or drink a liquid that has the bacteria on it.
Touching something that has the bacteria on it and putting your hand in your mouth.
Swimming in water that has the bacteria in it.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of this infection may start 2 to 7 days after the bacteria gets in your body. Symptoms include:
Diarrhea, commonly with blood, mucus, or pus.
Abdominal pain or cramps.
Fever.
Nausea.
Vomiting.
Loss of appetite.

However, in rare cases some people can develop lasting problems, such as arthritis, irritation of the eyes, painful urination, or a kidney problem called hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Drinking
Drink enough fluids to keep your urine clear or pale yellow. This helps prevent dehydration.
If you are dehydrated, ask your caregiver for specific rehydration instructions. Signs of dehydration include:
Thirst.
Dry lips or mouth.
Dark urine.
Headache.
Until your diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting is under control, drink only clear liquids. Clear liquids are liquids you can see through, such as water, broth, or non-caffeinated tea. Avoid milk, fruit juice, alcohol, and very hot or very cold drinks.
Eating
If you do not have an appetite, do not force yourself to eat.
If you do have an appetite, eat a well-balanced diet that includes:
A variety of complex carbohydrates, such as rice, wheat, potatoes, and bread.
Lean meats.
Yogurt.
Fruits.
Vegetables.
Avoid high-fat foods. They are difficult to
