Shiftlet: A Narrative Fiction

Shiftlet took off down a dirt road that was impeded with thick weeds. His stump dangled out the window and his one steady hand grabbed the wheel so tight his knuckles turned white. Dark clouds formed above his head as if God had personally came down to punish him. “Oh Gawd, please don't spite me” Shitlet repeated, to the point of insanity. The clouds grew darker with each tire spin of the car. Alone with his thoughts, Shiftlet began to picture Lucynell. He saw her pink-gold hair, her crystal blue eyes and the way they’d sparkle if the sun hit them just right. Heavy rain began to pour out of the watchful clouds, as if someone had been ringing out a soaking wet towel. Edging his stumb back inside the window, Shiflet skidded to the side of the road. She woke when she felt a cool rush of water dripping down her neck. The young buss boy had been applying cool towels in hopes she would wake. “Gosh, lady I thought yous was dead!” The buss boy exclaimed. Lucynells pink-gold hair was matted down to her skull, the water had turned it into an auburn color. Lucynell looked up and down hoping for the familiar, yet sharp face. Nothing. She began thrusting in her seat, turning, kicking and pounding on the counter with her fat hands. The ham and grits that had once been fresh and steaming now had flies slowly nibbling away at each morsel. The buss boy suddenly backed up, he didn't know how to handle this. ‘Hey lady! What's wrong?!” he shouted far back so they she couldn't hurt him. It had been around 1 a.m and the buss was locking up for the night. Lucynell was having a fit falling off of her chair, and colliding with the ground. She laid there, sprawled across the checkered printed floor. The buss boy not wanting to be involved, darted out of the dinner. The push door swung back and forth sending a gust wind that ingawled the buss boy. Lucynell sat there.

She was pale, trembling, and altogether extremely sickly. “By a snake…” Morgan would have succumbed to her dizziness another time if it had not been for what her new profession was. She had just been recently employed a nurse. Feeling the gravity of the situation yet not quite realizing just how opportune her timing was, she knelt and reassuringly asked the girl if she could get up. Journal Entry 1 – Descriptive Entry (Act II - Proctor) Diary, Although I had promised myself to never open and write in this book again, I can’t help but feel that today’s events should be recorded in here so I can set them away from my mind. If the memories are remembered in here, I wouldn’t to hold remember them in my mind. I had just come back home after a long day of planting and tending the land. I placed my rifle down beside the fireplace as I was welcomed in by the wave of warmth, a distinct contrast from the merciless chill outside.…

Screams punctured his sleep like a nail through the skull. Ben fumbled through darkness as his fingers snapped the light switch up and down. He knew the Historic French Market Inn was old and some of the wiring dated back to the 1920s, when Decatur Street was a rough neighborhood teeming with sailors, prostitutes and shady dealings. But the lights were dead. More screaming from the streets, but Ben couldn’t tell if it was someone in trouble or clamoring for beads from atop a French Quarter balcony.…

It was a quiet Friday at Henry’s. There were only five customers scattered around the restaurant. There was elderly couple at one of the booths quietly eating their food, two younger men at the bar chatting about their plans for the night; and one man sitting near the window and reading the local tabloids. Both George and Lennie were, in the back of the restaurant, working. George was cleaning dishes, while Lennie was trying his best to mop.…

The Daybreak was equal parts bar and diner, although the only patrons drinking at three in the afternoon were those left over from the night before. The building was probably a good size back in its day, but, after years passed and the townspeople moved away, the eatery felt emptier than a ghost town. Midday sunlight poured past the pine trees and warmed the bar stools through the windows, however, that was no excuse for the oscillating fan to be parked beside me on a late February day. I shivered. I pushed the eggs around my plate with a half eaten piece of toast, contemplating whether or not I did the right thing by not telling Amile about the stain.…
