Shield Analysis

Improved Essays
I was fairly unorganized throughout the time that we were preparing our SHIELD speeches. I had not decided what I wanted to write about, let alone what I wanted my shield to be. I finally decided what to do a few days before my speech, meaning I needed to change my entire script and shield. However, I put a large amount of time into it that weekend and practiced several times, which I believe payed off in the end. When giving my speech, I was nervous, but due to the fact that I had practiced it frequently, I was still sure of what to say. As I talk, I tend to block out other people and distractions in the room, so it felt like I was not actually talking to anybody at all. I paid attention to what I was saying and what I was going to say, …show more content…
I also left out a few points during my speech, which was unexpected. Nevertheless, those incidents could have been avoided. I left out an important part explaining how my first examples related to my first point, and I also did not talk about my dog. It was probably confusing for the audience to see a picture of my dog on my shield but then not mention her at all. Lastly, I could also improve on my nervous tactics, like swaying or playing with my note cards. This happens during some speeches, but not others. For my next speech, I plan on being more prepared instead of figuring it out at the last minute. This will hopefully allow for more time to prepare and practice my speech exactly the way I want. Improving my eye contact variety is also an area to improve on, along with suppressing some of my nervous tactics. An example of a time when you might be required to introduce yourself to someone is when you are on a date. When meeting someone for the first time, it helps to know about them. You might not necessarily need to know every single detail about them, but the more you know, the more you can form connections with them. In all relationships, dating or just friendships, knowing who you are with is an important aspect of being able to communicate effectively with

Rhetorical Speech Reflection Rhetorical techniques within my speech were subtle yet still managed to enhance the message I was trying to convey; that all firearms should be banned in the United States. I used a combination of rhetorical techniques including; anaphora, hypophora, a mild chiasmus, alliteration, and sententia. Halfway through my speech, I used anaphora when I was describing the different reasons people have for owning guns. This particular method was helpful because I wanted to portray the reasons as ridiculous and repetitive, which paired well with anaphora, since it added to the redundancy with its own repeating sentence beginnings.…

To be honest I was never a good public speaker there are times I avoid public speaking there are certain fears I had such as tongue tied, forgetting my lines, the awkward silence when I try to make a joke or point and by being myself blurting out words like "stuff" or "shit" unconsciously. I know it's so unprofessional but it happened quite a few times. After speaking in public I kinda dwell on what I said something that bothered me or that was unsaid.…

The other unexpected event was the I lost my voice during the speech due to a cough, so I regathered myself and carried on with it, which I think I handled well. The experience I had with the SHIELD Speech and the Informative Speech were very similar, however there were some differences. Differences were things such as how I dress up during my informative speech and not my SHIELD Speech. From now on I will try to dress up during my speeches because I believe that dressing fancy increases confidences and makes them have a positive…

Delivering the Pet Peeve speech was on the whole a relaxed and enjoyable experience. When the assignment was first issued, I felt a bit reluctant to deliver the speech; I’m only friends with a handful of students in the class, and probably disliked by the rest, so I couldn’t be confident in having a receptive audience. Due to my previous experience public speaking during coffee houses however, my apprehension was easily surmountable. I believe these types of opportunities to perform in front of a crowd on a limited scale are an excellent skill builder for affairs later in life, be it an impromptu toast at a dinner party, or reciting your wedding vows. As far as preparation goes, my approach was casual: I practiced delivering my speech two or three times on a timer, doing my best to fall within 10 seconds of the 3 minute mark.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…
