The pungent stench of decaying flesh overwhelmed her senses. Birds sang in harmony above, oblivious to the horrifying scene below. She stared blankly at the scene in front of her, trapped deep in her thoughts, devoid of all emotion. The birds song mutated into a piercing ring, sending a painful ache across her forehead. Snapping out of her thoughts, she stumbled back to reality, bare skin scraping against the rough bark of the surrounding trees. Her breath caught in her throat, the erratic thumping of her heart echoed in her ears, as if it were trying to force its way out of her chest. She let out an ear-piercing scream. She spun around in a frenzy, stumbling over roots and bushes, running as fast as her weak legs would allow.

All that could be heard was Belle’s heart-wrenching sobs. Both girls stood, lost in their own thoughts. As they began to process what they had just been told, Ava shuffled over to the log she had previously been sitting on, and slouched down, her eyes on the ground and mouth open. She hunched over, head slumped, held her hands. It all became too much and she screamed, echoing through the forest, before breaking down in sobs. It’s happening again.

Phoebe hadn’t moved a muscle, lost in her own thoughts.

“Guys,” her soft voice cracked as she spoke over the lump in her throat. “We-we need to get out of here.” She hadn’t turned to see Ava and Belle; all she could hear was their agonising cries as they grieved.

“What if there’s a s-serial killer on the loose? What if w-we’re next?!” Ava cried between sobs.

“We need to calm down and get out of here.” Phoebe turned around; tear streaks down her face, surprising the others. She had always been the one that held the group together. “We need to call the police. Where’s your phone?” Phoebe decided, getting into action and striding towards the tents. Belle crawled over to the logs and pulled herself
