The name of the short story is also the name of the main character, Heart who is describing her many thoughts and issues that come from her father’s abandonees and her mother’s Psychological instability. The father of Heart and Cody ran out and abandoned his children and wife due to the fact that he had a relationship with Heart’s teacher Miss Baker. When the father ran out with Miss Baker, Mama developed an inferiority complex, and mental instability. She actually thinks that Heart and Cody’s father is on the receiving end. She misses her ex-husband so much that she still sometimes thinks that they are still together.
In the story, Heart and Cody’s mother says that she saw and spoke to their father, but at that time, he had left her and was in Florida with Miss Baker. That shows that their mother has not yet accepted the fact that her husband has left her, and is still trying to hold on to him, because she loves and misses him so much.
Symbolism is showed, when Heart finds Cody’s to telephone at the end of the text. She begins to talk to it, just like her mother did. Even though Heart does not show it in the story, she actually misses her father very much and, like her mother, doesn’t accept the fact that her father is not around anymore.
The girl Heart narrates the short story, and we understand the story from her point of view as she explains her thought and opinions throughout the text.
