On September 16th, 2015 at 7:30 PM in Williams Hall, I attended the screening of the film She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry by Mary Dore, a . This film was a documentary that followed through the history of various remarkable women who were a part of the women’s movement between 1966-1971. I was a bit curious on what the film would be like, only knowing what the title of the screening was, but I was not disappointed by the amount of respect I gained for the women who took a part of this documentary and the history they had to go through to make a change in the world as it is today. The film included many controversial topics such as abortion, rape, gender roles, and equality. One of the discussions and events that really spoke out to me was

Since the beginning of time and even today, women have had to live up to society’s standards of how they are supposed to act and live their lives. Stereotypes have been placed upon women that have yet to be lifted, and only few women have challenged those stereotypes. In Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is a strong female character who goes against the stereotypes placed upon her, as a women in the early 1900’s. Similarly, in the movie Thelma and Louise, the best friend duo living in the late ‘80’s have to overcome obstacles thrown in their way because of the stereotypes they were facing. Most of these stereotypes were employed by men who think they know what is best for a woman, when in reality, they do not.…

Throughout history women’s role in society has continuously changed and prospered, and is continuing to alter as time goes on. A role in society more often than not develops to become better or satisfies the people to which it affects. There has not been a time without the need for women and there will never be such a time, for the human race as we know it should in fact go extinct. With such an important role in the reproduction of humans, women were not always held to the standard importance that they possess, and only until recently have they been molded into a role of higher significance. Adrienne Rich’s “From an Old House in America” is an enlightening poem that depicts women’s roles throughout society from being merely just an object…

Remarkably, women were often seen protesting at anti-war movements as well as peace rallies. Simone de Beauvoir communicates her secure opinion that “women should desire peace as human beings, not as women” (Laville 2002, p. 125). Countless women who protest break the traditional womanhood rule by leaving their homes to participate in these movements, demonstrating their own rights as…

Co-parenting is often seen in an image of both parents sharing the responsibilities, both in the workplace and at home, equally. But the idea that is co-parenting is one that many couples hope to achieve once they’re married, mostly get shattered as they soon realize that it’s much more difficult to obtain then they had imagined. Both “The Myth of Co-Parenting: How It Was Supposed to be. How It Was,” by Hope Edelman, and “My Problem With Her Anger,” by Eric Bartels address the stereotypical problems of roles within a marriage, but Hope Edelman focuses more on what a woman’s perspective regarding how the roles should be taken and implementing it, while Eric Bartels is more about emphasizing the actual struggle of fulfilling the role and its…

“A Few Words About Breasts” by Nora Ephron The essay that was my personal favourite was “A Few Words About Breasts” which was published in the magazine Esquire by Nora Ephron in 1975. This essay was about an androgynous woman named Nora who writes a series of anecdotes about her struggles of being flat chested throughout her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. During her childhood and adolescence, women with bigger busts, and more “girly” qualities were considered to be “real women”. This impacted her so much that she did not feel like a female anymore and pretended to be someone who she is not for many years. She faked her periods and cramps, and tried “do it yourself” home remedies which suggested that you can make your breasts grow by various ways such as splashing cold…
